If you want to pursue a post-secondary degree in the USA, you have several paths you can take. There are three different types of institutions in the US offering post-secondary degrees:
- Community colleges
- Universities/Colleges
- Liberal arts colleges
Community Colleges
Community colleges, sometimes known as junior colleges, generally award two-year associate degrees designed to help students transfer to a four-year degree program.
Universities/Colleges
Here, the most common bachelor’s degrees offered are Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Most institutions also offer graduate degrees as well.
Liberal Arts Colleges
Liberal arts colleges focus on undergraduate programs. Students take various courses in the humanities, arts, sciences, and social sciences. Liberal arts colleges offer Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees (and may offer associate’s and graduate degrees, too).
What majors can I study in the US?
In general, you can study almost all education areas (majors) there are in the United States. However, two subject areas do tend to prove difficult to use in another country if you earn a degree in the States. Those subjects are Law and Medicine. If you’re considering either of these majors, speak to us and we can offer guidance. All other subjects are far more transferable to use outside the US or qualify you for graduate school.
